Special Needs & Accelerated Students

Special Needs & Accelerated Learners

St. Stephen's Learning Lab Teacher, Marie Fowler, serves both students with learning challenges as well as students that find it easy to succeed in school. A variety of best practices are implemented to help every child reach his or her potential. Mrs. Fowler remains current on educational research to assist her in creating a learning environment that fosters success. A variety of math manipulatives, reading material, learning games, and teaching strategies motivate student learning. Mrs. Fowler works with students in small groups, pairs or individually allowing her to assess each student's development with the goal of helping each student receive the assistance best suited to their needs.

Mrs. Fowler also works with a team of professionals from East Grand Rapids Public School including: a speech pathologist, social worker, educational psychologist, occupational therapist and physical therapist. When further testing or an evaluation by another professional is needed, Mrs. Fowler helps the classroom teacher and the student's parents with the process of receiving services provided by the public school.

Enrichment Opportunities

Below are some of the enrichment opportunities available to students at St. Stephen School. We believe learning happens all day, everyday and participation in these programs by our students and staff helps foster a love of life long learning.

Accelerated Reader Program

The Accelerated Reader Program is available in grades K-5. This program encourages students to read, read, and read! Students read a book of their choice and are able to take a reading comprehension test on the computer. Points are awarded based on the results of the test and each classroom uses these points in unique and motivating ways. This program has been used successfully in our school for over 10 years and in that time our students have read over 20,000 books!

You Be the Chemist

St. Stephen middle school students are participating in the You Be the Chemist (YBTC) Challenge. YBTC is a national challenge sponsored by the Chemical Education Foundation. It is a challenge similar to a Quiz Bowl competition that focuses on chemistry, the scientific method and lab safety.you be the chemist logo
